How the Test Helps
Vitamin B-12 test helps in estimating the levels of Vitamin B12 in the body. It is an imperative vitamin to make blood cells and to maintain a healthy nervous system. Vitamin B-12 is usually measured at the same time as the folic acid because the lack of either of the one can lead to anaemia. There are several risk factors for this anemia, such as those who have had stomach or intestinal surgery, small intestine problems, or people with a family history of this anemia.
Vitamin B12 Test Instruction:
It is a non-invasive and pain-free test. Do not eat or drink (other than water) for 10 to 12 hours before the test.
Understanding the Test Results:
A normal level of vitamin B12 in your bloodstream is generally between 190 and 950 picograms per milliliter (pg/mL).
Between 200 to 300 pg/mL is considered borderline and your doctor may do more testing. Below 200 pg/mL is low and more testing is needed.
In some cases, your doctor may also test for your folate level because low folate can cause signs and symptoms similar to low B12.
