A TSH test is conducted to ensure that your thyroid gland is functioning the right way. An under-active or overactive gland can lead to disorders and serious health problems.
What happens during a TFT test?
TFT (Thyroid Function Tests) is a series of blood tests to measure how well your thyroid gland is working. Available tests include T3, T3RU, T4, and TSH.
The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland in the neck region in front of the windpipe. It’s responsible for helping regulate body processes such as metabolism, energy generation, and mood. The test is concerned about your thyroid hormone levels such as T4, commonly known as a thyroid-stimulating hormone. If the results come back abnormal, further tests will be prompted to pinpoint the reason behind the problem.
When should I take the test?
Thyroid tests are usually taken to understand and determine thyroid disorder associated with hypo or hyperthyroidism i.e., underactive or overactive thyroid. Your doctor would usually recommend you to take up the test if you have signs and symptoms that may be related to this condition affecting blood cells. The test is important to be taken during regular intervals to understand the progress of the treatment or when you are receiving the treatment related to blood cells. You can take this test as a part of your routine test as well just to keep yourself abreast of your thyroid issues.
What is the right TSH level?
TSH levels should ideally range between 0.4 and 4.0 milliunits per litre (mU/L). If your TSH level is above normal, you are suffering from an under-active thyroid and if less than normal you may be suffering from an overactive thyroid.
Are there any precautions I should know about?
In general, there are no particular requirements before a TSH test. However, one must consult a doctor, in case they are under specific medication, since certain ingredients may affect thyroid levels.
How frequently should I take this test?
Repeat the test every 3 months to rule out the disorder and with the onset of symptoms and then once in 6 months or a year.
